Last weeks news

Another busy week has flown by so quickly. We have had another jam packed week working with Mrs Johnston on our arts and literacy project focusing on the topic ‘oceans’.

This week we learnt lots of facts about humpback whales, a particular highlight was when we found out that adult humpbacks can grow up to 20 metres long, we really enjoyed measuring this in the playground. We wrote postcards home to let our families know what learning we have been doing and we have continued to enjoy using different materials in our art work. The parents celebration on Friday was fantastic and we were so proud of all of the children. Thank you to all the parents and families that came to share our learning.

On Monday we will be back to our normal classroom routine, our topic will be ‘Ship A’Hoy! I’m Sinking!’which is based on the heroine Grace Darling. Year 1 were lucky enough to have Grace Darling come to visit on Thursday so we know are eager to begin finding out lots more about her.

In Maths next week we will be continuing with place value and we will partition some two and three digit numbers.

In Literacy we will hook with the book ‘The Lighthouse Keepers Lunch’, we will be thinking about the characters and writing speech bubbles in the role of the seagulls.

From now on in class Year 1 will have a ‘Sound of the Week’ last weeks sound was ‘ee’ this week next week our sound is ‘igh’ please practise writing words with this sound in at home.

This week my Star of the Week is Fatimah for writing a fantastic postcard and for helping her peers with their writing. I hope that you have a great time with Tommy Bear and we can’t wait to hear what he has been up to on Tuesday. Well done Fatimah, keep up the good work!

Just a reminder to please make sure that your child has their PE kit in school with them, our PE is on a Thursday . Maths homework is due on a Tuesday, Topic homework looked at on a Thursday and Spelling tests are completed on a Friday.

Please continue to keep reading with your child whenever possible; accessing Reading eggs and Mathletics and practicing spellings, counting and letter formation on the sheets that were sent home in book bags.

As we seem to have a very cold snap at the minute please ensure that your child has their coat with them each day and a hat, scarf and gloves to avoid the, getting cold outside at lunch and break times.

Pleas continue to check our class blog for regular updates and news and pictures of our learning in Year 1. The children love to receive comments on what we have been doing! I also put on regular maths, literacy and phonics house point challenges for the children to do.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me on or arrange a time to come and meet with me.

I hope that you all have a lovely weekend.

Miss Chamberlain 😄
