Friday 5th February

Hello,

Another week has flown by and what a lot of learning we have done!

In maths this week we have been focusing solving missing number subtraction problems. The children used practical apparatus and hundred squares to help. They have really grasped this! Next week we will be focusing upon money. We will be recognising coins and notes and some of the children will be solving money addition problems.

This week in Literacy we have hooked with the book ‘The Singing Mermaid.’ The children using adjectives to describe the mermaid and the story setting. Next week the children will be designing their own mermaid character and then writing their own mermaid story. Over the weekend it would be great if you could talk to your child about what they would like to happen in their story. Are there any other characters? In grammar next week we will be focussing on verbs.

This week’s sound was ‘oo’ as in poo at the zoo. Please get the children to practice writing and reading words with this sound at home. Next week’s sound is. oo’ as in ‘book’.
This week in Science we thought about the 4 basic needs of a human to stay alive. We then had a go at sorting things that were either alive, dead or had never been alive. Next week we will be looking at the similarities and differences between animals and humans.

In art this week we have created seascapes using different media. These look fantastic and very colourful on our display.

This week’s star of the week is Ahmad! This is for his amazing literacy work he did yesterday when we wrote adjectives to describe the mermaid. Well done Ahmad, keep up the great work I am very proud of you! I hope that you have a fun weekend with Tommy Bear and I am looking forward to seeing what you get up to in his diary next week.
Just a reminder please make sure that children have PE kits in school for a Thursday. Maths homework is due in on a Tuesday; spelling tests are on a Friday. Library books are to be returned on a Tuesday. Topic homework is checked on a Wednesday. Children receive 3 house points for each piece of topic homework!

Please continue to keep reading at home with your children whenever possible; accessing Reading Eggs and Mathletics and practicing spellings, counting and letter formation on the sheets which were sent home in book bags.
Please continue to check out our class blog for updates and pictures of what we have been doing in year 1.The children love to receive comments on what we have been doing! I also put on regular maths, literacy and phonics house point challenges for the children to do.
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to email me on emily.chamberlain@allertonceprimary.com or arrange a time to come and meet with me.
I hope you all have a lovely weekend.
Miss Chamberlain
