In maths this week we have been focusing upon place value of 2 and 3 digit numbers and the vocabulary of units, tens and hundreds. The children could identify the value of each digit and some even had a go at partitioning 2 digit numbers! Next week in maths we will be solving missing number addition problems.
In Literacy this week we have started to hook with the book ‘The Lighthouse Keepers Lunch’. Yesterday the children worked together to deduce information from a picture about the character Mr Grinling. Today the children wrote speech bubbles in the role of the seagulls with a focus on using exclamation marks. As part of our grammar work we did rainbow sentences which involved thinking about our capital letters and full stops. Next week we will be thinking about singular and plural and adding –S to nouns.
From now on in class year 1 will have a ‘sound of the week’. This week’s sound was ‘igh’. Please get the children to practice writing and reading words with this sound at home. Next week’s sound is ‘ow’.
In Science next week we will be thinking about the five senses and will do some practical activities around this.
In Geography we will be thinking about the features of a seaside town and in History we will be continuing to think about the hero Grace Darling.
My ‘Star of the Week’ this week is Layth! This is for trying so hard in his writing. Today I was amazed at the speech bubbles he wrote in the role of the seagulls from the Lighthouse Keepers Lunch.
Just a reminder please make sure that children have PE kits in school for a Thursday. Maths homework is due in on a Tuesday; spelling tests are on a Friday. Library books are to be returned on a Tuesday. Topic homework is checked on a Wednesday. Myself and Mrs Khan have both looked through the learning logs and feel that the children should be writing more and should be taking real pride in these books, let’s hope on Tuesday we see some fantastic, neat work.
Please continue to keep reading at home with your children whenever possible; and Mrs accessing Reading Eggs and Mathletics and practicing spellings, counting and letter formation on the sheets which were sent home in book bags.
Please continue to check out our class blog for updates and pictures of what we have been doing in year 1.The children love to receive comments on what we have been doing! I also put on regular maths, literacy and phonics house point challenges for the children to do.
